Córdoba declared an environmental, economic and housing emergency due to the fires

A few weeks ago, Córdoba suffered severe fires that affected thousands of people and caused a provincial tragedy. Given this, Congress declared the environmental, economic and housing emergency for a period of 180 days.

The statement was published in the Official Bulletinly aims to adopt measures to combat fires in the province of Córdoba to “restore and reestablish affected areas and prevent new outbreaks“. The Government will focus specifically on the localities located in the Sierras of Córdoba and in those departments affected by the fires that occurred between August and September.

The Government declared an economic and housing environmental emergency in Córdoba

As detailed in the measure, the Executive will allocate an “extraordinary amount to immediately intervene and assist the purposes of the reconstruction of infrastructure and recovery of affected economic activities“. It will be assigned through the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Sports.

In the text published in the Official Gazette, the Government detailed that the actions will be implemented in “coordination with the government of the province of Córdoba and the municipal governments of the affected localities“following the” protocols established by the National Fire Management Plan“.

“The priorities and distribution methodologies of the assigned resources will be defined according to the urgency of the needswith a focus on the well-being of the affected people and the restoration of the environment and the affected biodiversity,” the official explained. In Article 3 of the emergency declaration it was detailed that “urgent public works will be prioritized, such as the repair and/or construction of homes and facilities, after a technical study that allows establishing the efficient allocation of funds.”

The measure will also allow the national Executive Branch to adopt the “special financial measures” to provide “direct support to the regional economies and the inhabitants of the affected areas.” Among them, they are described; credit lines with discounted rates for home repair or continuity of key economic activities; facilitate the financial sustainability of local businesses and the suspension up to 90 days of trials and administrative collection procedures of debts due before the emergency.

The consequences of the Córdoba fires

The fires in Córdoba began in August and lasted throughout the month of September. So far this year, the province has recorded a total of almost 70,000 hectares burned. In detail, during the last incident, the fire outbreaks affected more than 47 thousand hectares: 40 thousand in Punilla, 5 thousand in Chancaní and 2 thousand in Villa Berna.

The work to contain the fire requires hundreds of firefighters to combat the flames and for several days it prevented circulation on national and provincial routes. Images of the fires quickly went viral.

In addition, according to the Ministry of Social Development and Employment Promotion, 28 homes with total destruction and 16 with partial damage.

The Government’s package of measures adds to what has already been announced by the provincial government. A month ago, the governor Martin Llaryora presented the Social, Productive, Environmental and Infrastructure Remediation Program to repair the serious damage caused by the forest fires in different parts of the province, in addition to allocating more than 15,000 million pesos for infrastructure works, environmental restoration, credits and tax exemptions, among other aspects.
