The well-known restaurateur Michael Wollenberg wants to enjoy his retirement in Cyprus. Then a truck crashes into his mobile home. Two days later he died in a clinic.
A tragic accident has put an end to the dream of Hamburg star chef Michael Wollenberg. Wollenberg had sold his restaurants in Hamburg, most recently the Wattkorn, and wanted to retire in Cyprus.
He wanted to go to Cyprus with his luxury motorhome, but the accident occurred near Istanbul. An acquaintance is said to have driven the motorhome. A truck crashed into the vehicle from behind, but the driver of the mobile survived. Wollenberg himself is said to have been sleeping in the back of the building at the time – he was seriously injured. Apparently there was no belt or airbag securing him on the bed, and the rear structures of motorhomes are made of a very light material and do not offer any accident safety. The 60-year-old was taken to hospital and died there two days later as a result of a ruptured lung.
Farewell to Michael Wollenberg
Friends and companions said goodbye to him online. Carsten Marek, operator of the notorious “Zur Ritze” pub on the Reeperbahn, confirmed to “Bild”: “I am shocked. He was in the intensive care unit for two days. A family member has now informed us that he has unfortunately died.”
Wollenberg was once named the best fish chef in the world. But now he wanted to withdraw. He had sold his last restaurant, the Wattkorn, and is said to have bought a house in northern Cyprus. HSV legend Bernd Wehmeyer said to “Bild”: “We sat together on Monday evening, Tuesday Michael wanted to leave for Cyprus and start a new phase of his life. He wanted to get out of the mill in Germany. He was a very good friend, I can still do it “Don’t believe it at all.”
Not only was Wollenberg a well-known chef, his and event manager Michael Ammer’s parties were also famous, albeit controversial.
