He Washington Post revealed that the billionaire of South African origin Elon Musk worked illegally in the United States for a brief period in the 1990s while creating a startup.
The Post reported that Musk came to Palo Alto, California, in 1995 to attend Stanford University, but he never enrolled in his graduate study program. Instead, he created the software company Zip2, which he sold in 1999 for about $300 million, according to the outlet.
Two immigration law experts cited by the Post said Musk would have needed to be enrolled in a full course of study to maintain a valid work authorization as a student.
Musk did not respond to requests for comment sent to four of his companies – SpaceX, Tesla, and The Boring Company – nor did his lawyer, Alex Spiro.
In a 2020 podcast cited by the Post, Musk said: “He was legally there, but he was supposed to be doing student work. “I was allowed to do support work for anything.”
The Washington Post cited two former colleagues of Musk who recalled that he received his work authorization in the US in or around 1997.
