US star Johnny Depp presented his film “Modi” at the Rome film festival. He missed the press conference and didn’t miss the red carpet.
Hollywood star Johnny Depp (61) was the star guest on Saturday evening (October 26th) at the 19th Rome Film Festival (October 16th to 27th). However, at the official press conference for his new film “Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness” about three important days in the life of the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920), he was conspicuous by his absence. “The plane from the Bahamas was delayed.”
However, countless pictures from the red carpet before the awards show that the actor made it there on time. He appeared in front of fans and photographers in a black suit with a vest, a cream-colored shirt and a patterned tie. He posed in a flash of flashes with his colleagues, including “Modi” lead actor Riccardo Scamarcio (44).
Scamarcio also played a role during the subsequent award ceremony in the Sala Petrassi, as he presented Johnny Depp with the Lifetime Achievement Award on stage. The two fell into each other’s arms and Depp hinted at a kiss.
Depp is said to have flown out again on Sunday morning.
Johnny Depp back behind the camera
“Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness” was shown out of competition at the film festival. The film marked Depp’s return behind the camera for the first time since his 1997 directorial debut The Brave, which was not particularly well received by critics. “Modi” is also one of the actor’s first projects since his court battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard (38) in 2022. Depp celebrated his festival comeback in Cannes last year with a leading role in “Jeanne du Barry”.
“Modi” tells the story of the Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani, who was known as the bad boy of the art scene and became famous with the modern style of his portraits and nudes. The drama is set in Paris during the First World War and tells of 72 turbulent hours “that would become a turning point in his life and ultimately cement his reputation as an artistic legend,” as the synopsis says.
Vanity Fair Italia got an interview with Johnny Depp despite his late arrival in Rome. He told the magazine: “I wrote and re-wrote this film so many times. I put so much of myself into it […] Some of the things Modi says, I actually said.” He explains why: “I’ve never cared about success, I’ve never been willing to compromise. I have never accepted certain things, I am not a lackey. It’s not that it’s always favored me, as they say, but I’ve never had that temperament. Besides, I’m too old to be a servant now.”
The film’s main role was played by the Italian Riccardo Scamarcio, with Hollywood star Al Pacino (84), Stephen Graham (51), Bruno Gouery (49) and Sally Phillips (54) appearing in other roles.
