Banfield defeated Racing 2-1 at home in a match played this afternoon at the Florencio Sola stadium for the nineteenth date of the 2024 Professional League.
The “Academy” had taken the lead with a goal from the defender Santiago Quirosbut the local team came back thanks to the striker’s goals Bruno Sepulveda and the midfielder Ignacio Rodriguez.
At 16 minutes into the first half, and in their first dangerous play, Racing took the lead, but the goal was not going to go up on the scoreboard. Striker Johan Carbonero was assisted with a long ball and precisely defined the near post, but he was in an advanced position.
Nine minutes later Banfield arrived, when a great cross to the far post by winger Mathías De Ritis reached striker Leandro Garate, who finished from very close but with a very tight angle. The ball went wide.
In the last attack of the first half, Racing missed a very clear goal. After poor control by Núñez, Carbonero had a counterattack in the open field and, after entering the large area, he defined the near post, without precision.
In the second half the goals came. After three minutes, defender Santiago Quirós took advantage of a bad mark by the “Taladro” in a corner and, after Carbonero’s shot that had been stopped by goalkeeper Facundo Sanguinetti, pushed the ball into the goal.
But the “Academy” advantage did not last long, since just five minutes later, a cross from winger Ramiro Di Luciano enabled striker Bruno Sepúlveda, who hit a header at the near post to level the match again.
At 19 minutes into the second half, midfielder Ignacio Rodríguez entered, who was placed as a hook and was essential for the victory of the albiverde team.
Only three minutes after his entry he put good pressure on goalkeeper Facundo Cambeses, who had the ball at his feet and was barely able to avoid the midfielder, who would have been in front of the empty goal.
And at 25 minutes, Banfield found the goal of the final advantage. A cross from the right by winger Braian Galván was cut off by Cambeses, but the rebound went to the other winger, Agustín Obando. The “Academia” goalkeeper blocked Obando’s shot but left a new rebound, which was taken advantage of by “Nacho” Rodríguez, who improvised a great scissors to turn the result around.
About 15 minutes later and when he had gained confidence, Ignacio Rodríguez finished off a free kick from the right side of the area. His shot was powerful and just went over the crossbar.
Banfield achieved a great victory to end a streak of three games without a win and move away from the bottom of the table, reaching twenty-third place. For its part, Racing continues to think about next Thursday, when it will face Corinthians.
