The family of Matthew Perry was spoken on the first anniversary of his death. Perry’s stepfather and journalist, Keith Morrisonand three of Perry’s sisters (Caitlin, Emily and Madeline Morrison) spoke on the American program Today about his final days and the foundation founded days after his death to continue his life’s work.
“The Matthew Perry Foundation is the embodiment of Matthew’s lifelong commitment to helping others struggling with the disease of addiction,” reads a description on the foundation’s website.
Perry addressed his intention to help those struggling with addiction in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thingsaying, “When I die, as far as my supposed accomplishments go, it would be nice for ‘Friends’ to appear way behind the things I did to try to help other people.”
“He focused a lot on helping other people, encouraging them to say ‘I need help.’ He tried to make people see that this was an act of bravery,” Suzanne Morrison said.
“I don’t even know if he had relapsed in his mind.”said his sister Madeline Morrison. Keith Morrison agreed, noting, “I don’t think he did.”
Five people were charged in connection with the actor’s death, including two doctors and the actor’s assistant, and three pleaded guilty, according to federal prosecutors.
Suzanne Morrison recalled that Perry said shortly before he died: “I love you so much and I’m so happy to be with you now.”almost as if it were a “premonition”.
“It was inevitable what was going to happen to him next and he felt it very strongly. But he said, ‘I’m not afraid anymore.’ And that worried me,” Emily Morrison said.
Fans’ love for Perry
His mother continues to be amazed by the devotion of her son’s fans, who continue to visit his burial site in Los Angeles.
“Every time I’m there, there are people who come to see it, still today. Normally that happens”said. “They leave him very nice letters. Like, ‘I felt so sad. You helped me get through my teenage years,’” he said, calling his impact on people “just incredible.”
He said he has saved all the notes. “Maybe I’ll post them at some point, so people can see them. But they really loved him, because they could relate to him.”
