Buena Vista Social Club trumpeter Manuel Mirabal dies

Manuel Mirabal played in various orchestras in Cuba for over 70 years and was considered one of the best trumpeters on the Caribbean island. He became world famous with the band project Buena Vista Social Club.

Trumpeter Manuel Mirabal, known from the Cuban band project Buena Vista Social Club, is dead. He died on Monday in Havana at the age of 91, the Cuban Music Institute announced. “What sad news. Thank you for everything, dear friend,” wrote Buena Vista Social Club singer Omara Portuondo on the X platform.

Mirabal was born on May 5, 1933 and was considered one of Cuba’s greatest trumpeters. He played in numerous orchestras, including the Tropicana Orchestra, the Casino Orchestra, the Cabaret Parisién Orchestra and the Cuban Modern Music Orchestra. He won a Grammy in 1998 with the band project Buena Vista Social Club.

The project emerged from the album of the same name, for which the British music producer Nick Gold and the US guitarist Ry Cooder brought together a number of then quite elderly Cuban musicians in 1996. The record sold more than eight million copies and was a worldwide success. German director Wim Wenders made a documentary about the group.
