After Teri Garr’s death, many stars publicly shared their grief. Her “Tootsie” co-star Dustin Hoffman also remembers her.
Dustin Hoffman (87) mourns the death of his “Tootsie” co-star Teri Garr (1944-2024). “Teri was brilliant and unique in everything she did and had a heart of gold,” in a statement. “Working with her was one of the great highlights. There was no one like her.”
Garr died on Tuesday morning (October 29) in Los Angeles after a long battle with multiple sclerosis, her representative Heidi Schaeffer confirmed to US media reports.
Teri Garr started her career in the 1960s
Since the beginning of the 1960s, Teri Garr has appeared in numerous TV and cinema productions – including as a dancer in six films by Elvis Presley (1935-1977). Garr was probably best known to most people for the comedy “Tootsie”. For the role of Sandy alongside Dustin Hoffman, Jessica Lange (75) and Bill Murray (74), Garr was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
“I was proud. Not only did the Academy know I existed, they liked me!” Garr wrote about the Oscar nomination in her 2005 memoir “Speedbumps: Flooring it Through Hollywood,” according to the New York Post. .
Teri Garr was also seen in films such as “Frankenstein Junior”, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, “Prêt-à-Porter” and some “Friends” episodes.
Long battle with MS disease
According to her own statements, Teri Garr has been battling multiple sclerosis (MS) for around four decades. In 2002 she made her illness public. “I think everyone is shocked and scared when they hear something like that,” she told CNN at the time. She saw eleven doctors before she got the diagnosis.
“MS is an insidious disease,” Garr wrote in her memoirs, according to media reports. “Like some of my friends have [MS] the tendency to appear and then disappear at the most inconvenient times. It took more than 20 years for doctors to figure out what was going on.”
