Donald Trump’s New York rally has further consequences: Latino singer Nicky Jam has withdrawn his support.

A racist joke about Puerto Rico at Donald Trump’s (78) campaign event in New York City on October 27 could be the turning point in his presidential campaign. Not only did famous Puerto Rican celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez (55), Ricky Martin (52) and megastar Bad Bunny (30) then announce their recommendation for Democrat Kamala Harris (60). A Latino star is now even changing camp: reggaeton singer Nicky Jam (43), who only made his support for the Trump campaign public in September.

“Puerto Rico deserves respect”

The son of a Puerto Rican man said Wednesday (October 30) that he is withdrawing his support for the Republican. “The reason I supported Donald Trump is because I believed it was the best thing for the economy in the United States, where there are a lot of Latinos… a lot of immigrants who are suffering from the economic situation. Since Trump is a businessman I thought it was the right step,” he says in Spanish.

He “never in his life” thought that “a comedian would show up to criticize and talk badly about my Puerto Rico.” Nicky Jam added: “That’s why I renounce my support for Donald Trump and stay away from any political discussion. Puerto Rico deserves respect.” The video has already been viewed 1.7 million times in just a few hours (as of October 30).

Trump’s election campaign appearance at Madison Square Garden at the beginning of the week caused strong criticism from all camps and, above all, attracted the displeasure of numerous top stars with Latin American roots because comedian Tony Hinchcliffe had described Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage” in his speech .

Criticism for Trump support

Nicky Jam originally expressed his support for Trump at a campaign appearance in Las Vegas in September, wearing a “Make America Great Again” cap as he said on stage: “We need you. We need you back. We need you as Presidents.” Some former musical collaborators then removed songs they shared with Nicky Jam from the streaming platforms.
