Women’s safety: Saoirse Ronan hopes for debate

The actress is surprised at how much love she gets for commenting on a talk show. She had silenced her male colleagues with two short sentences.

Actress Saoirse Ronan (30) receives a lot of support after a brief comment on a talk show. When a BBC show discussed how to defend yourself in the event of an attack using your cell phone, her colleague Paul Mescal said with amusement: “Who thinks about something like that? If someone attacks me, I don’t pick up my cell phone.” Ronan then replied: “Women have to think about this all the time. Am I right, ladies?”

The men in the group then became quiet and the Irish actress received a lot of applause from the audience. Many people have contacted her since then, said Ronan (“The Outrun”, “Lady Bird”) on Virgin Radio UK. She didn’t expect these reactions. “But I think it says something about the society we live in and how open women want to be with the men in their lives.”

She defended the men in the discussion group. At the same time, the scene reminded her of dinner with friends. “And I will always emphasize that this is an experience that we have every day, 100 percent.” It’s wonderful that the issue is getting attention through the Graham Norton Show. This enables a debate and hopefully allows more women to talk about their experiences.

“We all unconsciously found the same tools”

She had just met a woman who was working on her new film “Blitz”. “And she said, ‘It’s really interesting, after we saw the interview, I was with some friends and my husband. And we said, ‘You know, that reminds me of the fake call.'” Her husband then asked, “What, fake call? What do you mean?” On the way home at night, women sometimes pretend to be on the phone with someone to show that they are not alone.

“And of course you don’t understand that unless you’ve experienced something like that,” Ronan said. “But she has acquired these tools in her life as a woman without ever talking about it with other women, and understood that it is a kind of survival strategy. And we have all unconsciously found the same tools and use them over and over again and that’s what I think I really interesting.”
