The Puerto Rican reggaeton star Nicky Jam on Wednesday he withdrew his support for donald trump and told his followers that he can no longer support the Republican candidate after racist comments made by Tony Hinchcliffe at a rally last weekend.
“The reason I supported Donald Trump is because I believed it was best for the US economy.where many Latinos live, including myself… many immigrants who are suffering because of the state of the economy,” Jam said. “As [Trump] He is a businessman, I felt it was the right decision.”
Jam had already appeared at a Trump rally, where he was introduced (and misinterpreted) by the Republican candidate, who told the crowd that he was announcing support for “Latin music superstar Nicky Jam” and said: “Do you know Nicky? “It’s very sexy!”. On stage, the musician posed for photos with Trump.
In his video on Wednesday, Jam went on to say that he had “never in his life” expected “a comedian to show up to criticize and badmouth me.” [Puerto Rico]”.
He added: “That’s why I renounce my support for Donald Trump and distance myself from any political conversation. “Puerto Rico deserves respect.”
The comments against Puerto Rico and other reactions
Hinchcliffe, a podcaster and comedian, made several racist comments at a Trump rally on Sunday, including when he told the crowd: “I don’t know if you guys know this, but literally There is a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. I think it’s called Puerto Rico”.
Many prominent Puerto Rican stars have criticized the comments, including Aubrey Plaza, Bad Bunny, Jennifer López and Ricky Martin.
“Thankfully, my sweet grandmother wasn’t here to hear that disgusting comment,” Plaza said Tuesday, according to a video of the event. “But if she were alive today, I think she would say, ‘Tony Hinchcliffe, fuck you.’ And yes, The Wall Street Journal can quote me on that.”
