Juliane Köhler: Red carpet is “exhausting”

Juliane Köhler became famous with films like “Nowhere in Africa” or “Downfall”. Her celebrity isn’t exactly what she likes about her job.

The actress Juliane Köhler (“Nowhere in Africa”) doesn’t like to be in the spotlight outside of her roles. “Celebrities, publicity and the red carpet are not my driving forces for my profession,” she told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ). Instead, content is her motivation, said the 59-year-old.

“If I like a material, if I find the role interesting, it’s fun for me,” said the actress from Göttingen. “The other thing is particularly exhausting for me – I’ve never been able to celebrate myself the way some colleagues like to do. That’s probably because I’m such a shy guy. I don’t want to portray myself as Juliane, but rather As the character I play, I’m no longer shy. When I can portray a character, I’m totally confident. But the red carpet is just really tiring.

According to Köhler, her shyness was also the reason why she was rejected from nine acting schools in Germany before she completed her acting training in New York.

Köhler can soon be seen in the film “Sonnenplatz” by Aaron Arens (releases August 22nd). The film tells the story of a family who come together unexpectedly in their holiday home on Lanzarote. “Good memories meet bizarre family anecdotes, old love meets new circumstances – and conflicts that have been simmering for a long time slowly but surely begin to escalate,” said the announcement for the film.
