With financing from the R&D&I Agencyand through the FONARSEC, The national government will finance the development of the energy project Wave drive. As they indicate, The agency will allocate a budget of US$50 million.
The project is located in the northern part of Silver Sea and the prototype was developed by the outstanding project of the National Technological University (UTNBA), punctually from the Regional Faculty of Buenos Aireswho is in charge of the investigation.
It is a groundbreaking project, since it will be about first wave energy converter prototype within the countrysomething that will make way for convert sea waves into electricity. However, the construction and installation remains to be carried out.
It is still in design stage. The objective is to contribute to reduce greenhouse emissions and achieve energy independence.
For this reason, if it comes to fruition, it would be the first prototype of clean and renewable electrical energy. A vital collaboration would be made to take care of the environment.
The engineer Pablo Alejandro Haim is in charge of directing the project, accompanied by a research, development and innovation team from UTNBA. It contains teachers, professionals and students of various specialties.
Such is the importance of the design, which obtained the 1st prize in the INNOVAR contest, highlighting the initial idea to the theoretical development. In turn, in 2015 it was declared National Interest, for the Chamber of Senators of the Nation.
The manager’s word
Pablo Haim referred to the ways of approaching the project: “We are managing the signing of agreements between UTNBA and FREBA. This civil association brings together different entities and companies that are getting involved in the project, such as; EDEA, PROINGED, Provisional Energy Directorate of Buenos Aires, Centrales de la Costa, among others.”
Likewise, the engineer stressed the importance of the respective project, not only within the technological community, but also for the general population.
“It is a pride as a Technological Engineer to carry out this project that could give many benefits to our Argentine people“, from clean and renewable energy, to energy supply to dispersed populations, work and growth within the national industry, and, no less important, taking advantage of our energy resources, reaffirming our maritime sovereignty,” he stated.

Advantages of wave energy
The official website of Wave drive explains: “The converter designed It consists of two buoys that capture the undulating movement of the wavesthis movement enters a kinematic chain of gears that transform the slow ascent and descent movement of the buoys into a rapid uniform rotating movement that enters a generator that produces electrical energy.”
“The buoys are made of hollow naval steel whose weight and measurements can vary between 2 to 20 tons and 3 to 10 meters in diameter. Depending on the dimensions of the equipment, the power may vary between 30 to 200 kW per buoy,” he continues.
Thus, its main advantages are based on the clean and renewable energy it produces, and the low environmental impact. Furthermore, it is accentuated by the ability to have and give constant, predictable energy and be very high performance.
In addition, Ocean wave energy is 10 to 30 times denser than solar energyand 5 times denser than wind energy. Therefore, it is a type of stable energy that offers better quality and is more sustainable.
