Payne was found dead after falling from the balcony of his third-floor room at the Casa Sur hotel. in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Palermo. His death, at age 31, sparked a global wave of messages of condolence from family members, former bandmates, fans and the general public.

Hotel staff had twice called emergency services to report that a guest was “vandalizing” a hotel room.

Payne had spoken publicly about his fight against drug abuse and about how to deal with fame from an early age. Payne’s latest work, a single called “Teardrops,” was released in March.

The day after his death, Pounds posted a tribute to Payne on Instagram, including a video of the British singer in the studio recording the song. “I can’t believe I’m writing this post. I can’t believe you left like this,” he said.
