Spanish royal family in turmoil: affair rumors about Infanta Cristina’s husband

When he went to prison, she stood by him – now the marriage of Cristina of Spain and Iñaki Urdangarin is making negative headlines again. Because he’s holding hands with another woman.

The Spanish royal family does not come to rest. Once again, Iñaki Urdangarin, wife of Infanta Cristina and thus brother-in-law of King Felipe, dominates the covers. The magazine “Lecturas” published pictures of the former professional handball player in its current issue on Wednesday. These were recorded on January 11 and show Iñaki walking on the beach with a woman. The blonde and he are holding hands. The problem: the woman is not wife Cristina.

Neither she nor the king’s brother-in-law have commented on the nature of the connection between Urdangarin and the lady. As the 54-year-old rode his bike to work in the northern Spanish city of Vitoria early Thursday morning, he was surrounded by reporters. When asked, he simply replied: “Things like this happen and we will deal with it as best we can. It is a difficulty that we will face together with the greatest calm, as we have always done.”

Cristina of Spain is said to have known about her husband’s new connection

“hola.com” had previously reported that Infanta Cristina knew about her husband’s connection and referred to statements from her circle. The 56-year-old is also said to have spoken to her father, ex-King Juan Carlos, about the matter. The couple’s second-eldest son didn’t seem surprised either when journalists asked him about his father’s pictures on Wednesday afternoon. Pablo, 21, said the family will continue to love each other in the same way as before. He has already spoken to his father, but not to his mother.

Pablo has followed in his father’s footsteps and is part of the FC Barcelona handball team. At the end of October, Cristina and Iñaki sat together in the stands to watch their son’s debut. Pablo had previously played in Germany and France, where his parents visited him. His two brothers also live in Spain, while little Irene lives with his mother in Geneva.

The king’s daughter Cristina stood by her fallen husband – even when he had to go to prison

The family has weathered some storms in recent years. In 2001 Iñaki ended his sports career and in the following years he was involved in the charity organization Nóos, among others. In 2011 it became known that he, Cristina and other colleagues were being investigated. Urdangarin was accused of fraud, tax evasion, money laundering and forgery. Cristina is said to have been guilty of aiding and abetting, the public prosecutor said at the time. Both have been charged. The king’s sister in the proceedings was acquitted. Her husband was sentenced to five years and ten months in prison in 2017. Urdangarin spent the first years in prison in Ávila, near Madrid. In 2021 he was transferred to Zaballa Prison. This is just under 50 km from Vitoria, his hometown. Since then, he has been allowed to work due to prison relief and has looked for a job in a law firm in Vitoria.

There he finally met the blonde lady with whom he was photographed holding hands on the beach.
