Olivia Rodrigo speaks to rape victim
Singer Olivia Rodrigo, whose fans are almost exclusively young and female, positioned herself clearly on her Instagram profile. It wasn’t the first time she brought up the topic of abortion. “A vote for Kamala Harris is a vote for reproductive freedom,” said Rodrigo. The 21-year-old sat down with Hadley Duvall for an interview. Duvall is an activist and is particularly passionate about women’s health and reproductive freedom. When Duvall was five years old, her stepfather began sexually abusing her. When she was twelve, she saw a positive pregnancy test, she tells the singer.

A shocking moment, but at the time, Duvall, who lives in Kentucky, knew she had a choice. She no longer has that choice today. Kentucky has tough abortion laws, with exceptions only when the pregnant woman’s life is in danger. There is no exception for incest or rape. A few years ago she was naive herself. “We’ll never lose this freedom,” she thought. “And here we are now,” Duvall told Rodrigo. Motivated by her own traumatic story, the 22-year-old is fighting on Kamala Harris’s side in the election campaign.

In conversation with the activist, Rodrigo explains how she experienced the day when the Supreme Court overturned the right to abortion in the USA. It was “heartbreaking,” said the singer. “Stories like yours remind us that anger is there for a reason,” says Rodrigo. “We should be mad. We’re pissed,” she continues.

Rodrigo’s video has already been viewed almost six million times on Instagram. Almost 40 million people follow the young musician there. The influence of celebrities on voter behavior was recently discussed when Taylor Swift announced that she would vote for Kamala Harris. The race between Harris and Trump is close – and so just a few percentage points could make the difference.
