“Musical genius”: Celebrities pay tribute to Quincy Jones
Quincy Jones shaped pop history with his work. There is correspondingly great sympathy for the death of the producer.
Mentor, inspiration, genius, friend: celebrities from culture and politics remembered the US music legend Quincy Jones with moving words. According to his spokesman Arnold Robinson, the globally celebrated producer and composer died on Sunday evening (local time) in his home in Bel Air in Los Angeles surrounded by his family. Jones was 91 years old.
US President Joe Biden (81) and his predecessor Barack Obama (63) praised his achievements. “Quincy Jones was a musical genius who changed the soul of America,” Biden said. “He discovered some of our most famous artists and shaped the most important records and music in history.” Obama posted a photo of him and Jones.
Justin Timberlake: “Mentor to so many who followed him”
US talk show host Oprah Winfrey (70) wrote that Quincy Jones discovered her: “My life changed forever for the better after I met him. I had never experienced anyone, and haven’t since, whose heart was so filled with love.”
Pop star Justin Timberlake (43) called Jones a “mentor to so many who followed him” on Instagram: “There is so much advice he gave me that I will carry with me forever,” wrote Timberlake . For producer and rapper Dr. Dre (59) was the reason Jones wanted to become a music producer: “Forever inspired by the incomparable Quincy Jones.”
Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney (82), film director Steven Spielberg (77), actor Will Smith (56) and many other stars also spoke up. “Above all, he was our friend,” Spielberg was quoted as saying in the trade journal “Deadline.” McCartney also wants to remember him above all as a friend.
Jones produced one of the most famous pop albums
Jones worked with Michael Jackson, George Benson, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee and Ella Fitzgerald, among others. He also ran a record label, composed film music, wrote books, brought feature films to the screen and developed and produced TV series. He is best known for one of the most famous albums in pop history: Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” from 1982, which Jones produced – as well as the Jackson albums “Off The Wall” and “Bad”.
