Women in politics have always worn pussy-bow blouses because they are not only considered feminine, but also a female counterpart to a tie. A fashion review.
Kamala Harris, Melania Trump, Margaret Thatcher and Dorothee Bär have something in common: When they make public appearances, the politicians wear blouses with ties. They are considered feminine, and some see them as the female equivalent of a tie. They have been a popular piece of clothing since the 80s, but thanks to Kamala Harris’ style they are now receiving new attention.
There were also times when the tied top was considered bourgeois and aunty in fashion. But it had little impact on the success of the bow blouse; it was always unfavorable to criticism. After all, it looks back on a long history: its roots go back to the 18th century, where the so-called “Lavallière”, the translated term for the bow tie, became a fashion must-have for educated women at the French court.
At the moment you can see her not only on the political stage, but also on the catwalk. At Prada, models walked with large bows in purple, at Louis Vuitton they were worn more casually, and Ulla Johnson even showed a model in neon yellow. The bright color wasn’t needed at all – the pussy-bow blouse is also the most eye-catching piece of clothing of the year.
