“Moon Safari”, a farewell to the 20th century

At a time when the whole world was wondering about the beginning of a new millennium, music was already giving something to talk about with the arrival of daft punka French duo that overwhelmed everyone with their electronic sound. Air, the duo made up of Jean-Benoît Dunckel and Nicholas Godinthey were cooking something special.

Dunckel had studied astrophysicsso at the time he was fascinated with planets and stars. In the midst of all this space consumption, where science fiction literature predominated, he came across Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury. There he found something that would catch his attention: a story about colonization where they offer a safari on the moon.

He put that in the blender along with other influences of his and Godin, such as the music of Françoise Hardy and Serge Gainsbourgand from there the inspiration was born. The result? Moon Safarian album that arrived at the right time. Enigmatic, sensual and spacey, it seemed literally taken from another planetand did not need speed. Precisely, the album highlights the downtempowhich gives rise to the duo’s musical creativity.

In those gaps enter the synthesizers, reverb keyboards and strings. On the other hand, electronic drums unite the entire project, giving rhythm and dynamism to the songs. In Dunckel’s words, the idea of Moon Safari it was that out music to listen to on a Sunday morning after having been partying the night before. It is in that slowness that we can come to savor all the instruments, with an order of songs that end up enveloping the listener.

On the other hand, Godin remarked in a recent interview: “I think it was more nostalgia for childhood, for an innocent time”. To that, he added: “But it is a paradox because, by doing Moon Safariwe knew we were ending our innocence. Moon Safari It was the death of our innocence and yet it is a testimony to it. He ended up destroying it, which was very cruel”.

The album highlights songs like “Sexy Boy”, “All I Need” and “Kelly Watch The Stars”. Another surprising thing about the successful project is that only two songs have a traditional pop lead vocal, lyrics and structure, both sung by the American vocalist. Beth Hirsh.

In times where grunge and trip-hop predominated, genres that were linked to a certain darkness, Moon Safari arrived like a hopeful sound, a drop of optimism among the dense rain. A change of scenery, pardon the pun. Air allowed people to travel to the moon without having to leave their place.
