Several factors lead to the Uruguay so that careers linked to technology are chosen by a significant number of young people, but also by professionals seeking to diversify knowledge and obtain new job opportunities.
“There are two careers that stand out, which are the bachelor’s degree in information systems and the bachelor’s degree in systems and systems engineering. They are the two careers that stand out regardless of which university, private or public,” he explained. Eduardo Mangarellidean of the Faculty of Engineering of ORT and president of Endeavoran organization dedicated to promoting entrepreneurship, to Scope.
“There are also what are called short careers, which are careers for those who eventually did not finish high school. For example, you can do a race programmer analyst “It gives you extensive knowledge of how software is developed, what the role of technology is within a company, and it is a very important vehicle for employment,” he commented.
Mangarelli is also a partner in technology companies, Triolabsfocused on artificial intelligence, and Intermediatefocused on services for the exterior.
“It is an increasingly common phenomenon to choose a technology career as a second career. That is to say, today we have engineering students, for example, or information technology analysts who are accountants or who have some prior technical training and who choose technology as a complement or as a differential in terms of accessing job opportunities. Today, indeed, we are in a scenario of zero unemployment“added the expert.

Regarding the reasons for this peculiarity, Mangarelli concluded that several things happen. “On the one hand, the fact that there is a very good flow of business creation in Uruguay. In the ORT job fair you see a reflection of that, of medium-sized companies that are created and founded by Uruguayans and that, obviously, are job generators. Then there is another segment, which is that of large foreign companies that decide to settle and hire in Uruguay. Factors such as connectivity, economic and political stability begin to play a lot there,” he assured.
“Uruguay ends up being, in most cases, a very good response due to the combination of infrastructure, Internet, stability, talent availability and, a fact that is no less influential, is the fact that the time zone in which we are located allows us to work particularly with the North American market with great simplicity,” said the teacher, who is also a teacher.
The job search
“Today we have here at the faculty 60 organizations and companies that seek to promote the types of profiles they are hiring, and also seek to position themselves as an employer brand because part of the phenomenon that generates zero unemployment is that people, and particularly those who “They are better at doing what they do, they can choose where they go to work,” Mangarelli analyzed.
There are multiple testimonies of young people who, for various reasons, find their vocation in engineering and opt for training in the country. This is the case of Rodrigo Soca, a Systems Engineering student who told his story to Scope. “As a child I said I wanted to be an engineer, I always had a great passion for numbers. And later when I grew up, it was what occurred to me, and I was always a very inventive person when it came to making things, not just the computer, but manuals.”
The opportunity for a quick and effective job exit also seduced Rodrigo. “With engineering you work everywhere, it depends on you how you focus. For example, now I started a transportation logistics venture, I am developing the part of the application to optimize loads, for example, you have extra volumetric space in the truck, and we take advantage of it, we make the truck occupy itself to the maximum and also that reduces the impact on the carbon footprint”, he narrated with enthusiasm.
Regarding the conditions that Uruguay has for development in the area, there is an important agreement between students, teachers and professionals. “Our country has several advantages, but at a fiscal level it could be improved somewhere else, doing something more type technology hubas it is Irelandin order to bring many more companies. We have the potential to be a differential in the region,” concluded the engineering student.
