Good news for all Royals fans: Princess Kate is back in public after completing her chemotherapy. But someone else was missing from the World War commemoration.
For the first time since the end of her chemotherapy, Princess Kate, 42, appeared in public at an important royal event. The wife of the heir to the British throne, Prince William, 42, took part in the commemoration for those who fell in the two world wars and other conflicts.
King Charles III, 75, who also has cancer, led the National Service of Remembrance at the central Cenotaph war memorial in London’s government district, which included silent remembrances and wreath-laying.
Camilla had proven to be Kate’s anchor
In addition to Charles and William, Princess Anne (74) and representatives of the government and opposition such as Prime Minister Keir Starmer from the Labor Party also laid wreaths at the Cenotaph. Kate watched the proceedings from the balcony of one of the government buildings.
The Princess of Wales wore a high-necked dark coat with epaulettes and a bow at the collar. Plus an elegant brimless hat with a coarse-meshed veil over the eyes and black-colored floral decorations.
Queen Camilla (77) was not there. She had to cancel at short notice. She wanted to continue recovering from a respiratory infection on the advice of her doctors, the palace announced the day before.
In the first few weeks after Charles and then Kate made their illnesses public, Camilla proved to be an anchor of stability by attending numerous appointments alone and stepping in for those who were sick. Now it was she who had to slow down. But there is no cause for concern, emphasized a palace spokesman. She just wants to recover and avoid the risk of infection.
William: Probably the most difficult year of my life
Kate had already appeared at William’s side at a Royal British Legion ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall the evening before. Just a few days ago, the Prince of Wales revealed for the first time his feelings over the past twelve months, in which first his father and then his wife were diagnosed with cancer. “It was probably the most difficult year of my life,” he said.
During her illness, Kate addressed the public several times with very personal messages after initially remaining silent. Most recently, she announced the completion of her chemotherapy in September with a lavishly produced video that showed her walking with William and her children. She also announced a gradual return to public duties.
The Royal British Legion, which supports veterans and survivors of fallen soldiers, raises money every November to commemorate the World War with the so-called Poppy Appeal, the call to light a small paper poppy flower in solidarity with the fallen.
The Service of Remembrance is held on the Sunday closest to November 11, the anniversary of the Armistice in the First World War, and is a permanent fixture in the royal calendar. The ceremony will include two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. and the laying of wreaths by the royals and important politicians. Thousands of veterans also take part in the commemoration.
