British artist Tracey Emin asks that a work she donated be removed from Boris Johnson’s residence

“I want it to be withdrawn, what they need is compassion, not passion,” the 58-year-old artist told the BBC, saying that leaders “don’t need a festive atmosphere.”

In the posting he made on his Instagram account, he explained the details of his position and considered that he would not ask him to stop being part of the government’s artistic heritage, which has more than 14,000 pieces, 44 of which are hung in the residence of Downing Street.

“I donated the work as a gift, I am not going to ask for it back. It belongs to the government, not to whoever is in power at the moment. It could be hung in the British embassy in Cairo or put back into storage. There are many places to who could go, but right now I don’t think it’s a very good idea for him to be in the official residence,” Emin explained.

“Most of us respect the rules. And it seems that this government does not care,” argued Emin, known for her intimate and provocative installations that made her known within the art scene as part of the Young British Artists movement, in the 1990s, alongside the likes of Damien Hirst, Rachel Whiteread, Chris Ofili, and Jake and Dinos Chapman.

For years she was considered the ‘bad girl’ of the group, eventually as her success grew she became a teacher at the country’s oldest and most traditional art school, the Royal Academy, and represented the UK in the Venice Biennale.

In response to Emin’s request, a spokesman for the prime minister said that the location of the work will be “discussed with the artist”: “I think it will remain in the government collection that exhibits works in various places.”

Johnson is facing his most serious political crisis since he came to power in July 2019 over a series of parties held on government premises as Britons had to restrict their contacts due to Covid-19 lockdowns.
