Simon and Garfunkel: The two have made up again

Legendary music duo
“I cried”: Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel have made up again

As Simon and Garfunkel they became successful worldwide. But for a long time, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were legendary at odds – until now.

The two US musicians Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, who were at odds for a long time, have made up again. “I had lunch with Paul a few weeks ago,” Garfunkel told the British Times. “It was the first time we had been together in many years. I looked at Paul and said, ‘What happened? Why haven’t we seen each other?'”

Simon responded to his question by saying that Garfunkel’s statements in an interview many years ago had hurt him. “I cried when he told me how much it hurt him. Looking back, I guess I wanted to shake off the Simon and Garfunkel nice guy image. You know what? I was an idiot.”

Art Garfunkel: “I was an idiot”

In 2015, Garfunkel didn’t leave Simon in good stead. Among other things, he was upset about the end of their musical collaboration in 1971, when, in his opinion, they had “reached their commercial and artistic peak” and Simon “escaped”. He also made fun of the small height of his colleagues and friends. “I tried to give him love, but in doing so I created a monster,” was the headline of the interview at the time.

Garfunkel told the Times that they had now made plans to meet more often. Whether Paul will bring his guitar with him is still up in the air. “For me it was about making it right before it’s too late,” said the 83-year-old. It felt wonderful. “When I think about it now, tears run down my cheeks. I can still feel his embrace.”

“Dad was so happy. He called me and said, ‘Paul is my brother, he’s part of the family,'” reports Garfunkel Junior, also speculating on a possible musical reunion of the famous duo. “I think there’s a chance they could make music again. I’m saying that purely hypothetically, but maybe at a big TV or charity event.”

Simon and Garfunkel delivered global hits

As Simon and Garfunkel, the duo enjoyed decades of global success. Now they have agreed to meet again, said Garfunkel. The two musicians, who were born just a few weeks apart in the New York borough of Queens, were among the most successful stars of the music scene as a folk duo, especially in the 60s and 70s – hits like “The Sound of Silence”, “Mrs. Robinson” and “Bridge over Troubled Water” went around the world. After falling out, both continued solo. Garfunkel recently released an album with his 33-year-old son Art Garfunkel Jr.
