He was considered one of the most important painters of our time. Frank Auerbach, who was born in Berlin, is dead. He died on Monday in London.
Mourning for Frank Auerbach (1931-2024). The British-German painter, a cousin of the late literary critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki (1920-2013), has died at the age of 93, his gallery Frankie Rossi Art Projects announced on Tuesday (November 12).
Born in Berlin, fled to Great Britain to escape the Nazis
“Frank Auerbach, one of the greatest painters of our time, died peacefully at his home in London in the early hours of November 11th,” gallery director Geoffrey Parton said in a statement. And further: “We have lost a dear friend and remarkable artist, but we can take comfort in the knowledge that his voice will resonate for generations.” A cause of death is not mentioned in the statement.
Born in Berlin on April 29, 1931, Auerbach fled the Nazis to Great Britain in 1939 as a child. His parents were victims of the Holocaust. In London he studied at St. Martin’s School of Art and the Royal College of Art. In the British capital he also met the painters Francis Bacon (1909-1992) and Lucian Freud (1922-2011). Auerbach painted in the same studio in north London throughout his life. He is said to have worked there 364 days a year.
Known for portraits and city scenes, Auerbach covered his canvases with thick layers of paint, from which he repeatedly scraped off what he was not satisfied with and started again. He represented Great Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1986. There he won the Golden Lion.
