The bridging financing from the social insurance for the self-employed (SVS) in the amount of 600 euros per month for the current quarter is far too little. At least 1,328 euros per month are needed to at least reach the poverty risk threshold.
Not a “normal cultural establishment”
“The exceptional situation is the same as a year ago, the government’s regulations to contain the pandemic are aggravating the already difficult situation. Normal cultural operations are still hardly possible, projects are canceled at short notice or postponed at some point,” says one of the IG Freie Musikschaffende and the IG Kultur signed the appeal. The IG authors, the IG visual arts and the central association of the professional association of visual artists in Austria joined the letter.
Gerhard Ruiss, Managing Director of IG Authors, noted that the government had taken the situation into account by extending the support funds for self-employed artists and cultural workers, the SVS bridging fund and artist social insurance fund (KSVF), by a further three months .
However, the subsidy amounts are calculated in such a way that additional income opportunities are assumed in these months. However, that is hardly the case. “You can’t even get through the pandemic with hanging and choking,” explained Ruiss.
