Dave Coulier has cancer. The “Full House” actor revealed in an interview that he has non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Dave Coulier (65) announced in an interview that he has cancer. He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a malignant disease of the lymphatic tissue, he says in the conversation published on November 13th. His cancer is already in stage three and is “very aggressive”.
From the common cold to the cancer diagnosis
The actor has known about his illness since October. He originally sought treatment for an upper respiratory infection, but the swelling in his lymph nodes increased rapidly and reached “the size of a golf ball.” Coulier then underwent several tests and a biopsy, after which he received a cancer diagnosis three days later.
“From a mild cold to being diagnosed with cancer, it was an overwhelming experience. It was a real roller coaster ride,” said Coulier. He initially reacted “stunned” to the diagnosis because it was so unexpected.
Coulier has good days and bad days
Coulier also says in the interview that his bone marrow was not affected. “At that point, my chances of recovery went from low to 90 percent. So that was a great day,” he recalls. Two weeks after his diagnosis, he started chemotherapy straight away and shaved his head as a “preventative measure”. He has now had six chemo treatments.
“I have my good days. I have my bad days,” reports the “Full House” actor about his current condition. “Some days I feel nauseous and dizzy, and then there are other days when the steroids kick in and I feel like I have a lot of energy.” He tries to enjoy each day as it comes.
Lots of cancer stories in the family
Especially because of his family, he wanted to fight against the insidious disease. Many members of his family also suffered from cancer and died. “I lost my mother to breast cancer. I lost my sister Sharon to breast cancer. She was 36 years old,” Coulier said. His niece also died of cancer at the age of 29, and his older sister is also currently suffering from cancer.
“I saw what these women in my family went through, and I thought to myself: If I can be a tenth as strong as them, then I’ll be fine.” The 65-year-old soon experienced an “inner peace” and felt inspired: “I had an incredible life on a journey with incredible people around me, and I’m doing well. That definitely changes your perspective.”
Coulier now wants to face his illness, talk about it openly, educate himself and look positively into the future. He is particularly looking forward to the birth of his son Luc (33). His first grandson is due to be born in March. “I have to teach him how to play ice hockey,” says the American. “There’s a lot to look forward to.”
Dave Coulier became internationally known for his role as Joey Gladstone in the TV series “Full House”. In addition to acting, he is also a voice actor and has lent his voice to characters in several animated series, including the “Ghostbusters” animated series. He has been married to Melissa Bring since 2014. His son Luc Coulier comes from his first marriage to US actress Jayne Modean (67).
