Britney Spears’ autobiography sparked worldwide interest in 2023. Now star director Jon M. Chu is talking about the film adaptation for the first time.
What does he have in the pipeline? Star director Jon M. Chu (45) speaks for the first time about his latest film project: the film adaptation of the globally successful autobiography “The Woman in Me” by pop superstar Britney Spears (42). Chu has the ideal qualifications: he has been riding a wave of success for years. He is a lifelong Britney fan. And he has already filmed the life of another superstar.
“There’s a lot about us in there.”
Last year, pop superstar Britney Spears once again made positive headlines for a change. In her autobiography, she reports more openly than ever about her beginnings in show business, her relationship with Justin Timberlake (43), her breakdowns and her personal liberation. Even the harshest critics paid respect to the often scandalous singer.
Director Jon M. Chu is currently making a name for himself with the film adaptation of the successful musical “Wicked”. The 45-year-old receives a lot of recognition, especially for his sensitive touch when dealing with stars like Ariana Grande (31) and Jeff Goldblum (72). He passes that on to Britney Spears: “She represents a whole generation of people who grew up in the 2000s and late ’90s,” the filmmaker told , “there’s a lot about us in that.”
“Deserves to be told properly”
On August 1, Universal Pictures announced that it had secured the rights to Spears’ book. Chu is being discussed as a possible director, and Marc Platt (67), known for films such as “La La Land,” is on board as a producer. Spears responded at the time: “I’m excited to share with my fans that I’m working on a secret project with Marc Platt. He’s always made my favorite movies…stay tuned.”
In his first statement about the project, Chu raves about Spears: “She has a story that deserves to be told properly,” he said. So far there is neither a cast nor a screenwriter: “We haven’t written the script yet,” says Chu. “But the initial concept for the film is about how we treat people, young people, stars we think we own, women, mothers. There are a lot of things I would like to question.”
Biopic about Justin Bieber for reference
Chu himself has the best references when it comes to the possible film adaptation of Britney Spears’ turbulent life. He describes his connection to the singer as close: “I’ve been a Britney fan for many years. I saw her when she was one of twelve acts at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Since then I’ve attended many of her shows and always have looked up to her.”
And Chu, who once celebrated his breakthrough with dance films like “Step Up to the Streets”, has another plus point to show: In 2011, in “Never Say Never”, he portrayed the eventful and anything but scandal-free life of mega star Justin Bieber ( 30) sensitively put into perspective. Even then he managed to hit the right note. He seems well prepared for the challenge of the Spears memoirs.
