The interest of consumers in foods that replace those of animal origin is growing

According to the latest report from the Argentine Vegan Union (UVA), 12% of Argentines and Argentines over 18 years of age are currently vegetarian or vegan, a number that increases every year.

In the survey carried out by Gelt, 83% of those surveyed answered that they would consume more vegetarian products, that is, foods that replace those of animal origin; while when asked about the main motivation for this change in consumption, they pointed out the price as the main reason: 39% maintain that veggie products are more expensive.

The main motivations for adopting this mode of consumption are: animal rights/animal protection (34.40%), health benefits (24.80%) and concern about environmental impact (10.67%).

When asking users how they came to that decision, one thing that stands out is the influence of the networks: 22% of the vegetarian respondents made the decision after seeing information on social networks.

“It happened to us with users, as soon as we offered alternative products they asked us to add even more, in recent months we have added more than a dozen products that replace options of animal origin,” said Pablo Rubino, Gelt’s marketing manager.

For his part, Gelt’s business manager, Ignacio Sciarra, said: “We know that one obstacle for brands to satisfy these consumer needs is the cost of the process that involves launching new products with vegetarian options.”

“Still, we believe that the trend is clear: in the future, everyone should have veggie food options,” he added.

According to a study carried out in mid-2020 by the Unión Vegana Argentina (UVA) together with the company Kantar Insights Division, the vegan-vegetarian community in the country numbered around five million people, which is equivalent to 12% of the population, three percentage points more than in 2019.

On the other hand, 78.3% of the companies that manufacture vegan products market them in the domestic market, according to a survey carried out by the certifier VEG Argentina, which reveals the growth of its consumption in the country.
