Head’s wife, Misty, wrote that the bullet “hit above his navel and lodged in his abdominal wall” and missed “all vital organs.” And further: “He won’t need surgery because they won’t remove the bullet.”

Meanwhile, there was conflicting information about the course of events on Saturday morning. According to wife Misty, Head was alone at his ranch when the incident occurred. “It wasn’t his hunting rifle and no one shot him. He got out of the vehicle and grabbed his .22, as he grabbed it the .22 came out of its holster and hit right on the outside of the Jeep and went off. Sundance said, that it happened so quickly and he could see the bullet coming off,” she wrote. According to this information, Sundance Head accidentally shot himself.

But just a few hours later, Head’s agent Trey Newman said in a statement obtained by NBC News that the bullet that injured Head likely came from a mistaken shot by a nearby hunter. “At this point we don’t know exactly how it happened, but we are 100 percent sure it wasn’t self-inflicted,” Newman said.

Police in Smith County, where the incident occurred, have not yet commented to NBC News.
