Bayern keeper announces cancer
Bayern goalkeeper Mala Grohs was diagnosed with a malignant tumor. The club responded with a special gesture of solidarity.
Shocking news rocks the FC Bayern family: Maria Luisa “Mala” Grohs (23), the number one goalkeeper for the FC Bayern Munich women’s team, was diagnosed with a malignant tumor. The 23-year-old also published via , in which she talks about her illness.
After the final examinations, she now has to undergo treatment and will therefore be absent from her team indefinitely, said Grohs. But she is “basically very optimistic” and is in the best hands with her doctors in Munich. Last Tuesday, the Münster native stood between the posts for 90 minutes in the Champions League game against Valerenga Oslo (Bayern won 3-0).

The news caused deep consternation among those responsible for Bayern. “We were all deeply shocked by the news of Mala Grohs’ illness,” explained CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen (57). “We are proud that she is part of our FC Bayern family and we as an entire club will stand firmly by her side to support her on her healing journey.” Sports director Max Eberl (51) noted that it was difficult to find words with such news, but: “Mala Grohs will now tackle her most important fight, we are by her side and wish her the necessary strength and all the best from the bottom of our hearts .”
Contract extension as a sign of support
As a gesture of solidarity, FC Bayern announced the early extension of Grohs’ contract for another season until the summer of 2026 at the same time as the bitter diagnosis. “With our contract extension we want to play a small part in ensuring that she can concentrate on her recovery – and you show that she should know that FC Bayern is always her home,” said Max Eberl, emphasizing the importance of this measure.
“I’ll manage to get well again”
In her personal video message, the Münster native, who moved from Bochum to Munich in 2019, addressed the fans. “The illness is a challenge that I never thought I would have to overcome,” said Grohs. “But I’m sure that with the help I’m now getting from everyone, I’ll manage it and get completely healthy again.”
Mala Grohs has celebrated three German championship titles with FC Bayern since her debut in the professional team in January 2021. The club asked that no further inquiries be made to protect the player’s privacy.
