David Coulier isn’t letting his cancer diagnosis get him down. Many women in his family were already struggling with the disease.
On November 13th, Dave Coulier (65) announced that he had cancer. He was previously diagnosed with so-called non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a malignant disease of the lymphatic tissue that is already in its third stage. In an interview, the actor known from the sitcom “Full House” described how he deals with the illness, for which he uses strong women in his family as role models.
He said: “I lost my mother to breast cancer. I lost my sister Sharon to breast cancer. She was 36 years old. I lost my niece Shannon. She was 29 years old.” However, he is currently not alone with his cancer – his older sister Karen is also dealing with the disease.
After observing how courageously these women dealt with cancer, he now knows: “If I can be just a tenth as strong as them, then I will be fine.” The impressive strength of these role models helps him to maintain an “inner calm” and not to panic.
Joint struggle with sister Karen
“I think they instilled that in me and inspired me in a way,” Coulier said, “because they were great at what they were going through, and I just thought, ‘I can handle it too.'” He and his cancer-stricken sister Karen are now in the same boat as a fighting team and support each other.
“My sister was a nurse and saw the whole thing from a different perspective than I did,” the actor revealed. “She’s been very supportive and very funny. So we joke about it. One of my jokes is that I went from a Virgo to a Cancer in four short weeks.”
