Palm Springs International Film Awards: Angelina Jolie can look forward to an award for her role in “Maria”.
Angelina Jolie (49) continues on course for trophies with her role in “Maria”. The first trailer for the film about opera singer Maria Callas (1923-1977), in which Jolie plays the lead role, is receiving high praise from critics. Now the actress can accept the Desert Palm Achievement Award for best actress.
This was announced by the Palm Springs International Film Awards. “‘Maria’ presents the iconic Angelina Jolie in the role of her life,” said Nachhattar Singh Chandi, chairman of the festival, explaining the decision. “Jolie’s extraordinary performance captures the heart and complexity of an artist whose life was as compelling as her music.” The committee is delighted to present the Hollywood star with the prize for his “fascinating transformation into this groundbreaking and at the same time tragic figure”.
Outlook for the Oscars?
The film awards ceremony will take place on January 3, 2025 at the Palm Springs Convention Center, the festival runs from January 2 to 13, 2025. In addition to Jolie, among others, Adrien Brody (51, Desert Palm Achievement Award, male actor), Nicole Kidman (57, International Star Award) and Colman Domingo (54, Spotlight Award). Previous winners of the Desert Palm Achievement Award include Emma Stone (36), Cate Blanchett (55), Viola Davis (59) and Renée Zellweger (55).
They all have one thing in common: In their respective years they were also nominated for an Oscar – so Angelina Jolie’s chances of being the golden boy are very good. Critics also already see her as a hot contender to win the most important film award next year. It would be the actress’ second Oscar: in 2000, she won the award for best supporting actress for “Girl, Interrupted.”
“Maria” will be released in select cinemas on November 27th before being shown on Netflix from December 11th. In the film by director Pablo Larraín (48), the plot follows the American-Greek soprano Maria Callas in her last days in Paris. In addition to Jolie, Pierfrancesco Favino (55), Alba Rohrwacher (45) and Haluk Bilginer (70) can also be seen in the film.
