He was the Bee Gees’ first drummer at the end of the 1960s: Colin Petersen has died at the age of 78.
Bee Gees fans mourn Colin Petersen (1946-2024). The former drummer of the Gibb brothers band died at the age of 78. This was performed by the tribute band Best of the Bee Gees.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dear friend Colin ‘Smiley’ Petersen,” the statement read. “He enriched our lives and provided our group with love, care and respect. We don’t know how we can continue to live without his bright smile and deep friendship,” the text continued. “We love you Colin, rest in peace”.
Best of the Bee Gees posted a photo of the deceased alongside the text. It shows him behind the drums, with a smile on his lips, which gave him his nickname – next to the film “Smiley”, in which he played the title role as a child actor in 1956.
First drummer for the Bee Gees after returning from Australia
Before Colin Petersen became the tribute band’s drummer, he played with the original. The Australian joined the Bee Gees in 1967. Barry (78), Robin (1949-2012) and Maurice (1949-2003) Gibb had just moved from their adopted home of Australia back to their native England. Petersen and the Gibb brothers met at school.
In 1969 Colin Petersen left the Bee Gees again. After a conflict with the band’s manager, he was fired. He founded Humpy Bong with the Irish singer Jonathan Kelly (1947-2020). After the group ended, he managed Kelly’s solo projects. In the 1970s Petersen returned to Australia and became a painter.
