Movies to watch: “Old Henry” a thoroughbred western

Today we start with “Old Henry” a western that premiered in 2021 and has not yet reached theaters in Argentina, nor is it on any of the platforms that are part of the mainstream (if it is on Mubi) but if we look a little on the web it is easy to find, pretend that you did not read that last one.

The history of “Old Henry” It’s about a widowed farmer trying to raise his teenage son fairly and smoothly, set against the backdrop of early 20th century Oklahoma.

Henry quotes the Bible and works hard, keeps his head down and tends his fields. But his seemingly peaceful world is shaken the day a horse with blood on its saddle turns up wandering onto his yard. If there’s blood, there’s a victim and that’s not a good thing, Henry finds a man on the verge of death and brings him to his farm.

The problem is that this man carries a bag full of money, he claims to be a sheriff who was injured by a gang of criminals, the problem is that the alleged criminals show up at the farm claiming to be lawmen. In this way Henry will be trapped between taking sides for one or the others, for his son’s decision-making and questioning, and also for his own past and this present where apparently nobody is who they say they are.

Surely many recognize who puts himself in the shoes of Henry from other movies, is played by the actor Tim Blake Nelson, a secondary luxury and frequent collaborator of the coens brothers.

This time Blake Nelson is the protagonist and without a doubt he shows that he is a seasoned actor for this type of film, a tired and affable but at the same time enigmatic face that can become very intimidating. It is without a doubt a great choice on the part of Potsy Ponciroli, young director and writer of “Old Henry”. The cast is completed with Scott Haze, Gavin Lewis, Trace Adkins y Stephen Dorff in secondary roles at the height of the circumstances.

In short, if you like the western genre, the drama that mixes with thrillers and, above all, action with touches of “John Wick” or the recent “Nobody”, “Old Henry” It is a movie you have to see.
