Matthew McConaughey looks back on the time when he wasn’t offered roles outside of the comedy genre. Back then, he made a pact with his wife, as he now says.
Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey says he made a pact with his wife Camila when he wasn’t offered any roles outside of comedies. “Since I couldn’t do what I wanted, I stopped what I was doing,” the 55-year-old said in a preview clip of the “Good Trouble” podcast. “I moved to a ranch in Texas and made a pact with my wife: ‘I’m not going to work anymore unless I get offered roles that I want to do.'”
McConaughey starred in many romantic comedies in the early 2000s, including Wedding Planner (2001) opposite Jennifer Lopez and How Do I Get Rid of Him in 10 Days? (2003) alongside Kate Hudson. McConaughey now reported that he liked this genre, but at that time he was just a “romantic comedy guy”.
During his break, he even turned down an action comedy with a fee of $14.5 million, said the Hollywood star. This was probably perceived in Hollywood as his “most rebellious step” and he was actually offered roles that he wanted as a result.
McConaughey later starred in Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013) and Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” (2014). McConaughey won an Oscar in 2014 for his portrayal of a rodeo rider infected with HIV in Jean-Marc Vallée’s “Dallas Buyers Club.”
