Marius Borg Høiby: Crown Prince Haakon of Norway is affected

The Norwegian royal family cannot escape the negative headlines. At the beginning of August, Marius Borg Høiby, 27, the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, was arrested in Oslo for alleged bodily harm and damage to property in the apartment of his then girlfriend. A little later he had to admit that he had attacked the woman while under the influence of cocaine and had rioted in her apartment.

After this first arrest, other women made serious allegations against Høiby, and photos of him posing with bags of cocaine, banknotes and a pistol emerged. After he was reported by another woman for alleged rape, he was arrested again on the evening of November 18th.

In view of this further escalation of the scandal, stepfather Haakon, who is currently away from home in Jamaica as a special ambassador for the UN development program UNDP, was forced to make a public statement on the matter. He told the Norwegian broadcaster NRK: “These are serious allegations that Marius is facing.” Our thoughts are with all those presumably affected and we trust that the police and judiciary will investigate the matter appropriately.

The royal followed this matter-of-fact statement with a few extremely concerned words, which he addressed to his wife Mette-Marit, who was in Norway: “Perhaps I could add that I would like to be at home with Mette today. I miss her.”
