Mette-Marit’s son Marius remains in custody – and is banned from visiting

Marius Borg Høiby is said to have sexually abused two women. Now he has to remain in prison – with strict conditions.

The Norwegian princess’s son Marius Borg Høiby has been taken into custody for a week after his third arrest in four months. After new allegations against the 27-year-old for two alleged sexual offenses, Oslo district judge Anne-Lene Åvangen Hødnebø decided that the eldest son of Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit will remain in prison until November 27th and will be banned from writing and visiting. Today, Høiby’s defense attorney Øyvind Bratlien wants to check whether he will appeal against the court order.

New accusations have been made against Høiby in recent months. These now include two sexual offenses, the most serious allegations against him to date. Høiby denies the new allegations, Bratlien even spoke of “catastrophic misjudgments” by prosecutor Andreas Kruszewski.

Marius Borg Høiby: Long list of accusations

The 27-year-old was first arrested at the beginning of August on allegations of bodily harm and property damage and was released the following day. In a written statement, he admitted that under the influence of alcohol and cocaine he had become violent towards his girlfriend at the time and had destroyed things in her apartment. In the text he also reported that he had been struggling with mental health problems and substance abuse for a long time.

Since then, the allegations against him have continued to expand, including abuse in close relationships with two former partners. On Tuesday, the police announced that he had been arrested for the third time and that he was now accused, among other things, of violating Section 291, which regulates rape offenses in Norway – the most serious accusation against him to date. According to the paragraph, violations can be punished with up to ten years in prison.

Specifically, the accusation involves sexual intercourse without sexual intercourse with a woman who is said to have been unable to resist the act. Prosecutor Kruszewski also announced on Wednesday that Høiby was accused of a second sexual offense of this type. This is now also being investigated.

Not a prince – but part of the royal family

All of these allegations have also hit the crown prince family to the core. These are serious allegations against Marius, Haakon told radio station NRK on Wednesday before his return from a visit to Jamaica. When asked how the family tried to help the 27-year-old with his difficulties, Haakon replied: “We as a family and as parents were of course very busy ensuring that Marius got help.” They have been working for a long time to get him to a place where he can receive more help, rehabilitation and treatment. This must now happen within the framework set by the legal apparatus.

Marius Borg Høiby is the eldest of Mette-Marit’s three children. He comes from one of the princess’s previous relationships, but grew up with her and her husband Crown Prince Haakon. Together with heir to the throne Haakon, Mette-Marit has two other children, the hereditary princess Ingrid Alexandra and the prince Sverre Magnus. Although Høiby belongs to the royal family, he does not have the title of prince and is not an official member of the Norwegian royal family.
