In the midst of the Buenos Aires government’s rejection of the law of Single Ballot approved by the National Congress, the Renovador Front presented this Thursday a bill to suspend the Open, Simultaneous and Mandatory Primaries (PASO) in the province of Buenos Aires.
The initiative is from the provincial deputy Ruben Eslaimanwho is part of the Unión por la Patria (UP) bloc and responds to Sergio Massaand does not contemplate the total elimination of PASO but rather a temporary suspension at least during 2025, when the legislative elections will be held.
They present a project to suspend the PASO in PBA
In the project, Eslaiman highlights that “it is important that any decision of this type be made with a deep, complete and analytical analysis”, while emphasizing the change in the political scenario that the country is going through with respect to the one that reigned when it was approved. the primary system.
“There is no empirical reason to maintain that the system has failed and did not meet its objectives. There are significant changes in the political, social and economic context, which mean that the current system must be discussed,” points out the text.
STEP PBA suspension project
In that sense, he assured that “the best way is to deepen the proposals and the debate, but not make a decision that distances the objective that this system had, since they encourage citizen participation and allow a greater number of people to get involved.” in the democratic process.”
“Primaries allow different voices and options to emerge within parties, which can enrich the debate and offer voters a broader range of candidates,” pointed out the legislator from the Frente Renovador.
Suspension, without removal
At the same time, the project states that it is essential to emphasize that the suspension does not imply the elimination of the primaries, but rather a commitment to improving the system.
“In summary, the temporary suspension of the PASO elections should be seen as a preventive act, given this complex scenario and proposal to be debated in congress,” he states.
On the other hand, Eslaiman asks that the proposal serve to strengthen the electoral system and guarantee that when they resume they are carried out under optimal conditions, which benefit citizen participation.”
As in various initiatives of the Government of Javier Milei, the province of Buenos Aires also opposed the implementation of the Single Ballot, a project that was approved by the National Congress.
In the district governed by Axel Kicillof, they considered that they created a problem where there was none, and that they “broke something that worked,” in reference to the Argentine electoral system.
It is worth remembering that the initiative to suspend PASO next year is replicated in various provinces. Both Salta and Chaco, for example, have already announced that there will be no primaries in their territories in 2025. The libertarian administration seeks to promote its own project at the national level, to suspend them throughout the country.
