Bowie II: “Toy”, the most pirated, now legal

2021 ended with one of the most obsessive box sets about David Bowie, and 2022 began with another deluxe box set from the creator of glam rock and 70s androgyny, only even more desirable, given that it is the deluxe edition of the legendary lost album “Toy”, pirated over the years but only now has its official edition. “Toy” has all the creativity and completeness of the Rhino label, without a doubt the best for these archaeological works. The story with “Toy” is that Bowie kept his late ’90s band in the studio a little longer to play in a relaxed way old songs he wrote in the late ’60s, and in some cases, during the recording of ” Ziggy Satardust”, and gave them arrangements that mix retro and the sound of Bowie that was being updated with the electronics of the coming century. But “Toy” was never released, because of those mysteries that only Bowie and perhaps his eternal producer Tony Visconti will know, who is very present here since he not only knew these old songs but also automatically put together the arrangements that the Duke expected. There’s even what Bowie called his first single back in the days when he was still Davy Jones. They are three albums without waste, since some of these old hits that could not be, sound really good, and it returns us to an unknown David Bowie.
