The president Luis Lacalle Pou confirmed where he will wait for the results of the runoff 2024between Yamandu Orsi and Alvaro Delgado, during his last public act prior to election day.
“I’m going to vote, I’m going to have lunch where I always do, and at 7:30 p.m. I’m going to the Executive Tower”, Lacalle Pou expressed in an improvised press conference when inaugurating a residential center for men affected by problematic drug use in the city of Peach.
During the event, where he made no political allusions due to the electoral ban,He expressed: “There are 99 days left and I invite you not to give up. Not only in dreams, in action, because that is what generates trust and is where hope stops. “A people without hope is a people that does not live.”
“The Uruguayan society, Far from what is often said, she is supportive and generous when she finds a cause that makes her fall in love or moves her,” the president said and highlighted that in Durazno they extended an invitation to him for March 7. “It’s not for the president, it’s for Luis, so I’m probably going to be here,” he said about his departure from the Presidency.
Lacalle Pou’s growing role in the campaign
As occurred in the run-up to the general elections, the president intensified his schedule of public appearances in the run-up to the second round, aware that his level of popularity could give a boost to the candidacy headed by Delgado for the National Party.
He even starred in a crossroads with the mirror reference of the Broad Front, the former president Jose Mujicawho during an interview criticized him for his personal expenses. “They are miserable, this Lacalle bought a $50,000 motorcycle, he has two trucks. Do you realize? These are the fathers of the country. Stop screwing around,” launched the historic leader of the MPP.
In responding to the former president, Lacalle Pou said: “There are only a few hours left for a second round and it is also about managing emotions. There is something that we all have to do, political leaders more than others. In my case, as President of the Republic: lower the ball, don’t give a handle and let the people decide who they are going to accompany.
“I think the noise and turning up the volume don’t help. I have not acted like this in these four and a half years,” he pointed out in that sense and noted: “I know how to say things. I haven’t screamed in years, I probably know how to scream. I haven’t insulted in years, I’ll probably insult myself. Now, what is the task of a ruler? If you can’t join, you can’t do anything. “You have to stay calm.”
