Angela Merkel’s “Freedom” sold 35,000 copies on its first day. The high selling price still ensures good sales.
The start of Angela Merkel’s (70) eagerly awaited memoir “Freedom” is mixed. , the book sold around 35,000 copies on its first day of sale. At first glance, this isn’t exactly a lavish number, but the publisher Kiepenheuer & Witsch achieved considerable sales of around 1.47 million euros – due to the high selling price.
However, the pure sales figures remain behind many other prominent new releases. For comparison, the current thriller by Sebastian Fitzek (53) sold over 80,000 copies on the day it was published. However, the retail price of Merkel’s book is 42 euros, significantly higher than the usual fiction prices. Fitzek’s “The Calendar Girl” costs around 25 euros and, despite significantly higher sales figures, only generated around half a million euros more in sales.
Huge crowd at the first book signing
The fact that there is certainly interest in the former chancellor and her work was evident at the first book signing in Berlin. , long queues formed at the Dussmann cultural department store on Wednesday evening. However, the signing session ended after around an hour and a half – according to the report, many fans went home without an autograph.
The accompanying reading tour is thus met with great interest. The remaining dates are November 29th in Stralsund and December 16th in Cologne
“Freedom” currently tops the bestseller list on the German Amazon branch. An English-language version is expected to follow in the coming months. The publisher is even planning a joint event with ex-US President Barack Obama (63) in Washington DC, whose own memoirs “A Promised Land” only sold around 15,600 copies in Germany on the first day of sales in November 2020 and have sold over 10,000 copies to date 576,000 copies sold. However, the book was a resounding success worldwide and sold millions of copies.
