At the film premiere of “Better man” Robbie Williams appeared on the red carpet with his wife Ayda Field. But his ex-girlfriend Nicole Appleton was also there.
“Better man” is a slightly different biopic. The film tells the story of Robbie Williams and his difficult beginnings in a boy band. The highlight: Williams is portrayed in the film by a computer-generated monkey. Fans of the singer should know what’s behind this creative decision. In the past, Williams himself said that he often saw himself as a monkey when he had to perform on stage despite his drug addiction.
Robbie Williams: ex-girlfriend Nicole Appleton at film premiere
One of his hits from his album “Escapology” is called “Me and my Monkey” and tells of Williams’ difficulties and lows. “I want everything I do from now on to be a little unusual, so this fits with that”Williams explained about the film production in an interview with “Vanity Fair”. “People often care more about animals than people. So viewers will probably have more compassion for me as a monkey than they would have had for me as a human”he also said.
Williams was accompanied to the big film premiere in London by his wife, actress Ayda Field Williams. But another important woman from his life was also there in the English capital: All Saints singer Nicole Appleton. She is also part of the biopic and is played by Raechelle Banno. Appleton and Williams dated in the 1990s after meeting on a television show in 1997. The relationship was turbulent. Williams was tormented by his addictions and demons and celebrated his first successes as a solo star.

She had an abortion in the 1990s
The two finally separated in 1999. Three years later, Appleton revealed in her biography “Together”having had an abortion during the relationship. “[Robbie] put his hand on my stomach and told me ‘This baby will save my life’. After my abortion I was in shock. I couldn’t believe what I had done”she wrote in her book.
When Appleton became pregnant, her band All Saints was on the rise. And so she was pressured by the record company to cancel. “I was horrified, hurt by what I perceived as the power of an industry that makes a woman sacrifice her child to keep a band together”Appleton revealed in her book. “What mattered was our success and our ability to make money.”
Seeing his relationship with his ex-girlfriend in his film was hard for Williams, he told the magazine “Hello!” recently told. “The hardest part is seeing Nicole and experiencing what we went through because she was ordered to abort our baby”said Williams.
Today, Williams feels ashamed when he thinks about his failed relationship with the singer. “I did the wrong thing with Nic. It wasn’t the abortion – I didn’t force her – but I was a terrible boyfriend, really terrible, and I was at the height of my addiction and alcoholism. And it breaks my heart every time I see it because she’s a complete angel and I’m still ashamed of who I was back then”said the singer in the interview.
After watching the film for the first time, he immediately called his ex-girlfriend. “We both cried. And then we couldn’t stop crying”he said of the phone conversation.
