Who was Facundo Quiroga
Facundo Quiroga He was a politician, military man and governor who stood out as one of the most recognized federalist leaders who marked a good part of Argentine history in the first half of the 19th century. He was born November 27, 1788 in San Antonio, La Rioja, which at that time was dependent on the Municipality of Córdoba del Tucumán when the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata ruled.
He was a supporter of a federal government during the confrontations after the declaration of independence, and by 1835 he managed to consolidate a strong influence and leadership over the provinces of La Rioja, San Juan, Catamarca, Tucumán, San Luis, Mendoza, Salta and Jujuy.
He was a main protagonist of the civil conflicts between federal and unitary that characterized the first decades of independent Argentina. There, Quiroga was characterized as the “tiger of the plains” and received much criticism from Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, who presented him as the embodiment of barbarism in his essay titled “Facundo or Civilization and Barbarism“.
He was murdered on February 16, 1835 in Barranca Yaco, north of the province of Córdoba, at the hands of a military group that ambushed his carriage. It was Santos Pérez who fired the shot, a hitman at the service of the Reinafé brothers. They sought to govern the Province of Córdoba, but the Rioja politician opposed them throughout his campaign.
