Music magazine “Billboard” is rowing back

For a highlight video, “Billboard” used scenes from Kanye West’s polarizing music video for “Famous.” Now the magazine is rowing back.

“Billboard” speaks out after controversial scenes from Taylor Swift (34) were shown in a video from the music magazine. The public apology now follows. “We are deeply sorry to Taylor Swift and all of our readers and viewers for using a clip that misrepresents her in a video celebrating Swift’s achievements,” the statement reads. The scenes have now been removed from the video. “We […] We would like to sincerely apologize for the harm caused by this error.”

Despite the apology, the post makes it clear that Swift’s fans are still angry. “Your apology will not be accepted. This should never have happened in the first place,” says one comment. Another user wrote on the social media platform: “We do not accept your apology. You posted a video that hurt Taylor deeply and that is just disgusting and so wrong. That is a weak apology.”

Highlight video with scenes from “revenge porn”

As it was announced a few days ago, the US magazine named Swift the second biggest pop star of the 21st century. On the occasion of this honor, a video was released that was actually intended to celebrate the 34-year-old’s successes. But the clip showed footage of a naked wax figure that is supposed to represent Swift. These come from the music video for Kanye West’s (47) song “Famous”, in which he depicted the singer and other celebrities naked. Swift then spoke out and described West’s music video as “revenge porn”.

Swift and Kanye have been at loggerheads for years. The dispute can be traced back to the MTV Video Awards in 2009: On stage, West interrupted the musician during her acceptance speech and emphasized that Beyoncé (43) deserved the award for the best video by a female artist. Seven years later, West released his song “Famous” – with ambiguous lyrics and the polarizing music video. His then-wife Kim Kardashian (44) also intervened in the dispute and published an alleged telephone conversation in which Swift West is said to have given approval for the song.
