Journalist about Marius Borg Høiby’s drug problems: “Knew it for years”

The problems of Mette-Marit’s son Marius Borg Høiby were known in Norwegian press circles. The police are also said to have known about it, explains a Norwegian editor-in-chief.

When Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son Marius Borg Høiby was arrested in early August, the general public learned of his problems for the first time. However, parts of the Norwegian press and even the police had long been aware of these. The editor-in-chief of the Norwegian magazine “Se og Hør” has now revealed this to the “Bild” newspaper. The magazine run by Ulf André Andersen has been reporting on the 27-year-old for weeks. “We knew about his drug problems for years, but didn’t write anything about it because it was a private matter,” Andersen tells the newspaper. Journalists usually carefully consider what information is relevant to the public and can be published in accordance with press law.

Possibly a wrong decision, according to the editor-in-chief. If the public had known about Borg Høiby’s problems, “then they could have held him responsible for his actions earlier.” He was also aware of the princess’s son’s connections to criminal groups in Oslo. Not just him and his press colleagues. “The police have known about this for a long time and have never done anything before,” says Andersen.

Last autumn, Borg Høiby was questioned “preventively” by the Norwegian police for the first time. As “Se og Hør” recently reported, the officers drove specifically to the royal residence of Skaugum, where they confronted him. “The police regularly carry out preventive interviews with people who may be in a criminal environment,” the authorities said. It would take almost a year before the situation at Borg Høiby escalated.

Andersen believes Borg Høiby urgently needs to make changes to get on the right path. His addiction to drugs in particular is a huge problem. “He should actually go to a rehab clinic immediately. He urgently needs help and must finally take responsibility. But the question is: Does he want to get help? Does he even understand that he has big problems?” says the editor-in-chief to “Bild” .
