Howard Carpendale on his son Wayne’s documentary: “Very moving”

Only a son could make a film about his own father in this form, says the singer about the documentary “Through my eyes – My Father Howard Carpendale”, which will soon be shown on TV.

Pop star Howard Carpendale (78) was accompanied by his son Wayne (47) for a documentary. “The film moved me very much because it was the most personal portrait of me that ever existed. Only a son could do it in this form about his own father,” said the legendary singer (“Hello again”, Ti Amo”) according to a statement from Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR).

Documentary in media library from December 13th

The 45-minute documentary “Through my eyes – My father Howard Carpendale” has its TV premiere on December 14th (9:45 p.m.), the Saturday before the third Advent, on WDR television. On December 13th it will be available in the ARD media library in the morning, and in the evening father and son will be guests on the Friday talk show “Kölner Treff”.

Howard Carpendale stands for almost 60 years of stage experience and, according to WDR, around 25 million records sold. In the new documentary, Wayne Carpendale gives intimate insights. “It’s the quiet moments away from the spotlights and the special relationship between father and son.” It’s not just about the life of an entertainer, but also about fundamental topics such as family, cohesion, the balancing act between success and personal challenges. Carpendale has often spoken about his experiences with depression throughout his career.

The documentary follows Howie from fall 2023 to summer 2024

Presenter and actor Wayne Carpendale (“The Country Doctor”) “worked as an author, producer and director for the first time” for the project. With cameraman Clemens Bittner, he accompanied his father from autumn 2023 to summer 2024. “The audience experiences my father in the film the way I see him: private, real and approachable, but without me interpreting him,” says Wayne. This authenticity makes the documentary special.

In one scene, according to WDR, a concert in Munich is on the verge of being canceled at short notice. Thousands of fans are already streaming into the Olympic Hall while Howard Carpendale is battling health problems behind the scenes. Wayne: “This clash of worlds – the vulnerable person meets the aloof star – is a central theme of the documentary.”
