“Neighbors” star suffers from lung cancer
Ian Smith goes public with a sad diagnosis: the actor is suffering from a rare form of lung cancer.
The actor Ian Smith (86) suffers from a rare form of cancer. He announced this in. “We all die. But when you find out exactly when you’re going to die, you become a completely different person,” Smith said. The Australian became known for his role as Harold Bishop in the soap “Neighbours”.
“A few months ago I found out that I have cancer. A very aggressive, incurable cancer, and they expect me to die,” Smith continued to the station. It is a pulmonary pleomorphic carcinoma, a rare form of lung cancer.

Despite his old age, Ian Smith reported in an interview that he was fighting the disease with all he could. That’s why he has already undergone three rounds of chemotherapy and a “relatively new” immunotherapy. “I really agreed to be a guinea pig. And if they can do that, I’ll be very happy.” The series actor hopes every day to wake up without pain and wishes “that I will die in a nice way.”
Retirement from acting
Ian Smith was part of the regular cast of the Australian soap “Neighbours” from 1987 to 1991 and from 1996 to 2009. In the following years he returned numerous times in guest appearances. He has been seen regularly in the series again since 2023. Following his diagnosis, he announced his final retirement from acting on December 2nd. “I had the most privileged life. We didn’t just make a soap, we made the best damn soap there was to make. I met the most beautiful people,” he told his colleagues on the last day of filming.
The show confirmed his final farewell. “Despite his health issues, he wanted to say a proper goodbye to Harold. It was a very emotional moment on set as we paid tribute to him and his incredible contribution to the series,” the account quoted “Neighbors” producer Jason Herbison as saying.
In addition to “Neighbours,” Ian Smith also appeared in other TV productions, including the series “Prisoner.” He also acted in the theater and worked as a producer and screenwriter.
