Between 2022 and 2023, 8.7 million people escaped poverty in Brazil. In that period, it fell from 67.7 million to 59 million people, the smallest number since 2012.


These data were celebrated by the president Lula Silva on his social network account X: “From now on we are going to collect everything we planted in these two years of mandate, in all areas. “The one who wins is the Brazilian people.”

In this period also extreme poverty was reduced. It went from 12.6 million to 9.5 million people, the lowest level since 2012. The drop was from 5.9% to 4.4% of the population. As explained by the IBGE social indicators manager, Leonardo Athias“the fall in poverty in 2023 is resultmainly, of the dynamism in the labor market and an increase in the coverage of social benefits.”
GDP growth
He IBGE also reported that, in the third quarter of 2024, the GDP from Brazil increase a 4% compared to the same quarter last year. It wasn’t the only good thing.
There was growth in consumption and investments. Family consumption rose 1.5%. Meanwhile, Government consumption grew by 0.8%. For their part, investments gained 2.1%.
