The Technical Museum is remodeling

Parts of the permanent exhibition are currently being renewed with special funds from the Ministry of Culture for 3.4 million euros. “We are in the midst of the largest conversion measures since the reopening of the museum,” said Director General Peter Aufreiter, who grew up in Linz, yesterday at the annual press conference. The presentation of Austrian industry and the show on the physical principles will be renewed. A permanent exhibition on climate change is scheduled to open in summer 2023.

The special show “BioInspiration – Innovation based on nature’s example” will start in autumn, as will a music lounge presenting Austrian electronic music, including objects by Falco, Joe Zawinul and Parov Stelar from Lichtenberg. The digital collection was recently opened. “A lot of this revolves around the question of how software can be stored in such a way that it can still be experienced in 100 years,” said Aufreiter.

207,000 visitors came in 2021

Visitor numbers have recovered slightly in 2021. They increased by 15 percent compared to 2020 to 207,000 guests. In 2019 there were still 430,000. In terms of income, the museum posted a minus of around 40 percent compared to 2019. Thanks to austerity measures and support from the Republic, the workforce was able to be retained. The museum is countering a certain lull in sponsoring and fundraising with new “object sponsorships”, among other things.
