The growth of poverty ratewas one of the most urgent records in the first half of the year. Government of Javier Mileiwho this Saturday ratified the course of economic decisions to reverse the current figure that places the 52.9% of the population with lower income Basic Basket.
On her social networks, Milei titled her latest publication “Poverty going down“and expressed:”There is a long way to go but we are on the right path. “The reduction of poverty must be due to improvements that are sustainable over time and not political devices that only increase it in the long term.”
The President’s comment referred to a study by Argentine Social Debt Observatorywhose “microsimulations” point to a poverty reduction from 54.9% -in the first quarter of 2024- to 44.6%in October of this year. The same trend would occur with the indigence: from 20.3% to 11.6%.

This look coincides with the last expression of the Ministry of Human Capitalwho responded to a study on poverty by the UCA: “The poverty figure is high, and we are aware that there is still much to do, but the signs allow us to be optimistic. Projections indicate that this trend will continue, in a context of macroeconomic stability and genuine growth of the economy, consolidating the new Argentina“.
Poverty rose to 52.9% in the first semester of Javier Milei’s administration
The poverty jumped from 40.1% to the 52.9% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year, which represents the highest number in 20 yearswhile the indigence climbed from 9.3% to the 18.1%, As reported this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC). Extrapolated to the total population, this implies that some 24.8 million Argentines are poor, while some 8.5 million are in a situation of destitution.
42.5% of households are in povertyabout 4,319,760, where 52.9% of the people live. Within this set, we distinguish a 13.6% of households below the indigence line (LI)about 1,378,142, which includes 18.1% of people.

Regarding age groups, It is highlighted that two thirds (66.1% of the total) of people from 0 to 14 years old are part of households below the poverty line.
The total percentage of people under the poverty line for the groups 15 to 29 years old and 30 to 64 years old is 60.7% and 48.6%, respectively. In the population aged 65 and over, 29.7% of people were located in homes under the LP.
The highest incidences of poverty in people were observed in the Northeast regions (NEA), 62.9%; and Northwest (NOA), 57.0%. The minor ones, for their part, were registered in the Patagonia regions, 49.1%; and Pampeana, 49.9%.
